La medición del petróleo y sus derivados, tienen como objetivo el control de la producción en la etapa de exploración, transferencia de custodia, refinación, transporte y comercialización que se obtiene de cada una de las actividades en la cadena de valor del petróleo, siendo de gran importancia en los costos y ganancias que estas pueden generar.
